Two Authors Remind Us About The "Other" Heroes Of 9/11 Roseville, CA Feb. 10, 2005 - On Saturday, March 12, 2005 (the second week of Womenıs History Month), there will be a presentation at the Roseville Theater of Women At Ground Zero: Stories of Courage and Compassion.

While watching the media coverage of the 9/11 tragedy, Susan Hagen and Mary Carouba were shocked by the lack of any women firefighters, police officers, or paramedics being interviewed. In response to the mediaıs portrayal of rescue workers as "firemen, policemen, brothers and our brave guys," this retired firefighter and investigative social worker decided to travel to New York City to find and interview the women rescuers who were at the World Trade Center.

The two Sonoma County writers pooled their credit cards and set out for Manhattan just a few weeks after the attack, even though they had no contacts, no press credentials and knew no one in New York City. They went on to write the book Women At Ground Zero: Stories of Courage and Compassion, a compilation of stories by 30 women who responded to the terrorist attack. This presentation will include an audiovisual presentation and a candid and sometimes humorous talk about their journey.

Their presentation and book are inspirational. Their wit and insight provide a strong sense of the power of women and the importance of their contributions at Ground Zero. Autographed copies of their book will be available after the presentation with 100% of the book profits going to The National Center for Women in Policing and Women in the Fire Service, Inc.

Net proceeds from the Roseville event will be devoted to scholarships for women to pursue these careers. A partial list of the sponsors of the event include both the Women Democrats of Placer County, Friends of the Roseville Public Library, the Roseville Police Association and the Womenıs International League of Peace and Freedom Auburn chapter.
