Obie Adams is doing his best to hide from his English
teacher, Miss Dale, who is involved with directing an intense
production of "Dracula." Once again, he's lost his homework, and
if Obie doesn't pass this year's English class, it's no diploma
for our likable, but weird, hero. Even worse, it could mean
(gasp!) summer school! Obie doesn't dare admit to losing it --
he's already used that excuse once too often. So instead, he
concocts a wild yarn involving the peculiar Mortimer Crank and his
spooky housekeeper, Mrs. Dank. Mortimer has been turning animals
into semi-human beings! There's Feydor the dog-boy, Luana the
panther-lady, Kong the gorilla-boy, and... well, you get the
picture. Also trapped in Mortimer's strange house are Mrs. Chapman
and her three daughters. Mortimer has never forgiven the mother
for jilting him years before. He plans a terrible (and hilarious)
revenge. Lucky for Obie he's studying detective work by mail and
has Clara Sidewinder to guide him. With weirdos popping in and out
of the dark and stormy night, none of it makes much sense. Except
to Obie, who has the entire "Dracula" cast engrossed in his tall
tale. Maybe Obie really is telling the truth. The result is a
spectacular comic romp.
