Civic Theatre West is committed to building character both as a student and as an artist.  We focus our Youth and Little Ones training in musical theatre where we teach basic skills in the fields of singing, dancing, and acting.  An essential component of musical theatre is working together as a team. We culminate our originally written shows in a fun performance for the community, family and friends.

With that mission in mind we offer:

Little Ones Workshops- Our Little Ones program is for ages 4 to 7. Little Ones classes meet from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Roseville Theater on specified days. In this one-hour workshop, once a week, our little scene-stealers will be on the stage of the historic Roseville Theater. In their workshop they will learn a song and simple dance as well as some unison and individual lines. Our dedicated staff will use fun theatre games to teach your child projection and stage presence. At the end of their six-week session they will join the Youth in rehearsals for Tech Week where they will perform as one act of a larger show. Then comes the best part of all: the bows!

Youth Workshop - Our Youth Workshop is for ages 8 to 15. Youth classes meet from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Roseville Theater on specified days.This three-hour class trains once a week with our professional staff to learn singing, dancing, and acting; all the skills necessary to perform their show. There are no lead roles in our workshop scripts because the most important lesson to learn in theatre is that there are no small parts! Everyone's participation and energy is vital to a shows success. Our classes are designed to inspire and engage students in the performing arts. We hope that each student who takes their bows at the end of the show is proud of themselves for their dedication and hard work. The sense of accomplishment they feel is a benefit that will carry over to every area of their lives.

Dear Workshop Parents and Guardians,

My name is Michelle Raskey and my role as Director of Education  includes the management of all Workshop productions at Civic Theatre West.

I have served as Civic Theatre West's Director of Education since 1995. During that time I have been the liaison between the schools of Placer County and our theatre, bringing thousands of children each year to experience the joy of live theatre. I have also had the pleasure of being the acting instructor for several of the theatre's Youth and Little Ones Workshops, and currently serve as the Director for our Master Shakespeare productions for Teens.

My passion is theatre. I believe that something amazing happens when someone attends a live performance that cannot be matched by any other media. There is a relationship between the performers and the audience that connects them, and the shared experience is art - vital, alive and transforming in its power. It is so wonderful to see children grasp that concept early in their lives. As performers the children learn confidence and self-esteem, camaraderie and teamwork; life lessons that they will take with them wherever they go and whatever they do. This is the excitement that I hope to bring to our Workshops as Director of Education: my passion for seeing children and young adults experience the magic of live theatre.
